BP Mystique 2-Tone Black Roof in Brooklin — New Shingles & Ridge Vent

This grey two-storey in Brooklin has a lot of roof for its footprint: two front gables of different heights, the main roof stepping between them, and lower roofs over the garage and the covered porch. It’s now finished in BP Mystique 42 shingles in 2-Tone Black, with a ridge vent running along the peak.

Below you’ll find photos of the finished roof, a closer look at the shingle and the colour, and why the ridge vent earns its place even though you can barely see it.

Lots of Gables, Lots of Valleys

Every place two roof planes meet on this house is a valley or a wall joint, and there are plenty of them. The tall right-hand gable and the smaller one on the left both tie back into the main roof, and the garage and porch roofs run along the front wall just below the second-floor windows.

Open stretches of roof are the easy part of any re-roof. Transitions like these are where water gets tested every time it rains, and where the quality of the install shows up years later.

Why 2-Tone Black Suits This House

2-Tone Black is one of the darker colours in BP’s Mystique range. From the curb it reads as a deep charcoal-black. Up close, as in the photo above, there’s a mix of darker and lighter tones across each shingle, so a big roof doesn’t turn into one flat, dark mass.

On this home the colour does a few things at once. It sits well over the grey siding, it makes the white fascia and gable trim stand out, and it carries the same finish from the main roof down onto the garage and porch roofs, so the whole front of the house reads as one design.

About the Shingle: BP Mystique 42

Mystique is made in Canada by BP (Building Products of Canada). BP describes it as a double-layer laminate shingle with oversized tabs and 3-dimensional shadow bands, which is where the depth you see on these slopes comes from. The 42 refers to the shingle’s length: 42 inches.

According to BP, Mystique is covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Its standard wind warranty covers up to 180 km/h, and up to 220 km/h when the shingles go on following BP’s high-wind application instructions. C.D. Roofing is a BP Platinum installer, and if you’re comparing brands, our BP shingles review covers what we’ve seen from them over the years.

The Ridge Vent Does Its Work Out of Sight

You’d be hard-pressed to spot the ridge vent in these photos, and that’s how it should look. It runs along the peak beneath the ridge cap shingles, so it sits low and blends into the roofline.

Its job is exhaust. Cooler outside air comes in low through the soffit vents, warms as it moves through the attic, and leaves at the highest point of the roof. With intake at the bottom and exhaust at the top, the attic keeps breathing instead of holding on to heat and moisture.

Two things make that especially relevant on this roof. Dark shingles absorb more of the sun’s heat than lighter ones, so a black roof sends more heat into the attic on a sunny day. And in a Durham Region winter, warm, damp air that can’t get out tends to condense on the coldest surface it finds, which is often the underside of the roof deck.

Ventilation is a warranty issue as well. BP’s current shingle warranty for Eastern Canada lists water infiltration or condensation caused by improper attic ventilation among its exclusions. A ridge vent also needs intake to work, so blocked soffits leave it with nothing to pull from. Our attic and roof ventilation work and soffit and fascia repairs cover both ends of that system.

Wondering whether your attic is venting properly? We can check the intake and the exhaust before your next roof goes on.

The Roof as It Stands Now

The new shingles cover the main roof, both front gables and the lower roofs over the garage and porch in one continuous finish. Against the grey siding and white trim, the darker roof gives the house a sharper outline from the street, and the laminated profile keeps the large slopes from looking flat in full sun. The ridge vent sits along the peak, doing its job without changing the look of the roofline.

Choosing a Shingle Colour You’ll Live With

Colour is hard to judge from a sample board. A few habits make the decision easier:

  • Look at whole roofs, not single shingles. A colour that looks nearly black in your hand can read as charcoal across a full slope.
  • Check it from the street in daylight. Bright sun, overcast skies and evening light all change how a dark shingle looks.
  • Start with what isn’t changing. Siding, brick, stone, trim and window frames are staying put, so the roof should work with them.
  • Plan for the heat on a dark roof. Darker colours absorb more of the sun’s heat, which is one more reason to get the attic ventilation right.
  • See it on a house like yours. Photos of finished jobs, like the ones on this page, show a colour at real scale.

Questions About Black Roofs and Ridge Vents

What does BP Mystique 2-Tone Black look like on a house?

From the street it reads as a deep charcoal-black. Up close, each shingle shows a blend of darker and lighter tones, and Mystique’s laminated design adds shadow lines across the slope, so a large roof doesn’t look flat. The photos on this page show it on a grey-sided two-storey with white trim in Brooklin.

What warranty comes with BP Mystique 42?

BP covers Mystique with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Its standard wind warranty covers up to 180 km/h, and its high-wind warranty covers up to 220 km/h when the shingles are installed to BP’s special application instructions. Our 10-year workmanship warranty sits on top of that and is separate from the manufacturer’s coverage.

What does a ridge vent do?

A ridge vent lets warm, moist air out of the attic at the highest point of the roof. Paired with intake vents at the soffits, it keeps air moving through the attic, which helps limit heat build-up in summer and condensation in winter. Because it runs under the ridge cap shingles, it’s barely visible from the street.

Do black shingles make an attic hotter?

Dark shingles absorb more of the sun’s heat than lighter colours, so the roof surface and the attic below it get warmer on sunny days. Balanced ventilation, with intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge, helps carry that heat out. If you’re leaning toward a dark colour, it’s worth having the ventilation checked at the same time.
